More Details:
Presenters will explore the challenges that indigenous people with disabilities are facing in communities in Mexico (Oaxaca), Honduras (La Mosquitia), Guatemala and the United States who face high rates of violence, trauma, labor exploitation, poverty, and segregation into boarding schools and institutions. Rather than reproduce medical model approaches to traditional mental health care, the program will showcase innovative approaches developed to promote trauma informed models of peer support.
Speakers will describe the multi-generational impact on placement of children from indigenous communities placed in orphanages and boarding schools. We will hear from indigenous people confronting these issues in their own communities and service providers providing support in indigenous areas. Disability Rights International (DRI) will share outcomes of legal advocacy in the Inter-American human rights system to bring reparations and remedies to this population. The panel will discuss lessons learned that can be used by disability activists and humanitarian groups serving similar populations in other parts of the world.
