Inter-American Commission on Human Rights orders Guatemala to protect children and adults from abuses in psychiatric facility

Washington, DC - November 28, 2012 - The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the Organization of American States (OAS) announced its ruling on an emergency "precautionary measures petition" filed by Disability Rights International (DRI) and the Office of Human Rights of the Archdiocese of Guatemala City (ODHAG) on behalf of more than 300 children and adults at Federico Mora Hospital, Guatemala City's psychiatric facility, a dilapidated collection of buildings adjacent to a large penitentiary facility at the edge of the city.

The United Nations calls again for investigation of JRC's shock treatments

Washington, DC-- A scathing article concerning the abuses against children with disabilities at the Judge Rotenberg Center (JRC) was published Saturday by the Guardian of London. Juan Mendez, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, told the Guardian he is "very concerned," about the use of electric shocks as aversive treatment on children with disabilities at JRC.

Disability Rights International to Testify on Torture in Mexico

Washington, DC – March 20, 2012 – Disability Rights International (DRI) and a coalition of partners from Mexico will testify before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) at a public hearing this Friday.  DRI’s findings in Mexico are “deeply disturbing” said DRI Executive Director Eric Rosenthal, J.D., “and the Mexican government must be pressured to protect its most vulnerable citizens – those locked away for a lifetime because they have a disability – living in orphanages, psychiatric institutions and other social care facilities.”
